The Rock B&B a former 17th century Coaching Inn located 2.5 miles from the centre of Coleford

Colford is only 2.5 miles from the Rock B&B and  is a small market town. The Rock B&B at Hillersland in Coleford was originally built around 1580 as a coaching inn although it is now completely modernised and offering modern stylish bed and breakfast accommodation.

Coleford was involved in skirmishes during the civil war culminating in the Battle of Coleford in 1643 when Welsh Royalist forces overwhelmed the Parlimentarian defenders of the town.
The kings head hotel was alleged to be the site where a royalist officer was shot.

Coleford has a great industral heritage as it was here here the process for making steel was discovered in the 1800's.

Just half a mile out of Coleford was the Whitecliff Iron works the Whitcliff furnace can still be seen just off the road. This is one of the first coke blast furnaces in the country.
Just above the furnace lies the original tram way which went through Broadwell and onto May hill in Monmouth.

Robert Mushet was a metalalergist who was initially associated with the White Cliff works but later established the Dark Hill Ironworks at near by Gorsty Knoll. Here he was the first person to develop steel rails instead of cast Iron opening the world up to railways! On the outskirts of Coleford lies Berry Hill which is just a mile from the Rock Bed and Breakfast. The famous playwrite Dennis Potter was born and brought up here.

Coleford is the location of the main South West Forestry Commission offices where some useful information can be found here for tourists. The Forestry commissions Management training centre is located just outside coleford and about a mile away from the Rock B&B

Coleford also is the location of the Forest of Dean district council and the Rock is popular with visiting workers supporting the Councils work. Since closure of the Forest of Deans Tourist information centres The council offices are now one of the sources of information for tourists to the areas although the Rock produce much of their own tourist information to help guests get the most from their visit

Today everyone may not know the town but surely knows one of the main products made here since 1947 - Ribena made by Glaxo Smithkline (GSK) in their modern production plant close to the town centre.

Colford was given a Royal Charter by Charles the 2nd in 1665.
