Building the Valley View B&B Rooms at The Rock B&B
When we moved to the Forest of Dean and bought The Rock almost exactly 8 years ago we had planning permission to convert the old skittle alley into two self-catering studios. We decided to stick with self catering but add small kitchenettes to allow people to prepare their own breakfasts from a pack we would provide. However this idea never took off and people always arrived in the breakfast room for their breakfasts, although the ability to prepare light meals is always appreciated. We started the construction in the winter 2010 completing the build around June 2011. It was a very bad wet and cold winter that meant the build completion time drifted and drifted and was not helped by us falling out with our first builder and at short notice finding a second. As you can see from the attached video the garden was pretty much destroyed only recovering after I re-turfed a huge amount of the lawn and likewise the car park needed re-leveling and new stone adding. The Weather was extremely bad and it seemed the only days when it stopped raining allowing the roof to be tiled was at a weekend and as we had no builders at that time I ended up tiling most of the roof myself. 5 years on the Valley View rooms still look good although we are planning complete redecoration over the winter. Ruarden, Clearwell and Bicknor rooms all prove very popular and were mostly booked out from May to October.
